Grégoire X, le Bienheureux (1210-1276)
The previous pope Clement IV left free the uppest place of the Church during
three years. Why three long years ? When the cardinals were gathered in Viterbo, that was in two groups :
the french and the italian, and they didn't find to decide of the next one during the vote, trying
to have the 2/3 majority.
During the summer of 1270, enclosed in the episcopal palace by the people of Viterbo,
without food, they had to chose. The Sâcré Collège designed six members (from fifteen).
Those selected the 1st september of 1271 Teobaldo Visconti, archbishop of Liège (Belgium).
Archbishop? Yes! He was not a cardinal.
At this moment, Teobaldo Visconti was in pilgrimage with Prince Edward of England.
He came back the 12th February of 1272, accepted the mission and took his functions
the 27th March of 1272. His tasks were in restoring peace between christian nations,
ending the german affairs, the amendment of way of life in the clergy and persons,
the union of the greek church and Rome and the stamping of Jerusalem and the Holy Land.
He will die the 10th January of 1276, he was 66 years old.
